Facilities
St. John has been blessed with a newly renovated gymnasium in 2007 through the dedication and hard work of the 2006-7 Raffle Committee, its patrons, and venders. The court meets Middle School dimension standards equipped with six basketball hoops, spectator seating, team bench areas, an official-clock station, and a nearby concession/kitchen area.
The soccer field complies with the minimum dimensions of Middle School standards equipped with regulation goals (furbished by the generosity of the Garrity Family)that meet the 2006 ASTM safety guidelines, team benches, and ample grounds for spectators.
Athletic Fee
In order to meet the needs of each player and provide equipment and services, participants are required to pay a specific fee for each sport or activity noted on the registration forms. Financial aid is available. Please contact Mrs. Jensen or the athletic director for more information.
Refund Policy
Refunds for clubs and intramural activities are honored at the discretion of the Athletic Director. Refunds for interscholastic teams will be honored if the participant withdraws before the first game of the season.
Code of Conduct
“Let the players play, the coaches coach, the referee judge, and the spectators cheer!”
Players Conduct
“Let the players, PLAY!”
Whether a participant is in class, at practice, or off campus, he or she represents the St. John School and is expected to act appropriately.
The participants of all activities will:
- Show charity through your words and actions to your team mates, all coaches, instructors, officials, directors, and opposing team.
- Display good sportsmanship, behavior, and effort at all times.
- Be prepared for all activities, by the expected times.
- Not mistreat or abuse the equipment or facilities. Utmost respect should be given to all property of St. John and that of the off campus site.
- Interscholastic Athletes are expected to abide by additional rules under “Athlete Conduct and Effort” found on page 12 of this handbook.
Coaches/Instructors Conduct
“Let the Coaches, COACH.”
The main objective of the sport-related activities is the formation of Christ-like youth. Athletes must be properly motivated and conducted by a positive Christian example from the coaches. The coaches are responsible for their conduct and language as well as that of their players, assistant coaches, and team parents. St. John coaches take the Norwich Diocesan Pledge of Sportsmanship:
“I promise to be loyal to my God, my country, my church, and to the integrity of the game; to be faithful and true to all my obligations as a Christian, a citizen, an athlete, and a representative of my diocesan school and parish.”
Parent/Guardian/Spectator Conduct
“Let the spectators, CHEER!”
The people that have the most significant influence on a child are their parent/guardian. Parents must commit themselves to being a positive Christian model for their child, even on the field or court.
Each spectator is expected to do the following:
- Show charity through your words and actions to the players, all coaches, instructors, officials, directors, and opposing team. Rude and belligerent behavior is not tolerated. You will be asked to leave the area.
- Refrain from disagreeing with the call of an official.
- Remain in the spectator area during games and practices. Only team members are permitted in the bench/team area.
- Keep children (athletes’ siblings or friends under your care) contained, well mannered, and safe during games, practices, or activities.
- Keep small children free of undue harm. The use of the swing sets and play area during soccer activities is not advised. Likewise the stage and school hallways are restricted during basketball activities.
- No one is permitted on the gym stage at any time.
- No one is permitted on the court or field during time-outs or half time.
- Never approach the coach, director, instructor, or referee with any grievance in front of the athletes or spectators. A private meeting must be set up with the proper person/s involved to discuss your concern in a Christian and professional manner. Please refer to “Conflict Resolution Procedure” on page 4.

Children who are unattended or found loitering on school grounds without supervision will risk suspension from the team.
- Know that the gym/field will be closed while interscholastic practice is in session. Parents are permitted to “check in” on their child/ren but must not be a distraction or a disturbance.
Warning of Risk of Injury/Casts/Inhalers
Warning To parents and Participants
As is obvious there is risk of injury in virtually every athletic endeavor. The athlete's signature on the any sport related registration form indicates that he/she accepts school and sport policies, understands the risks involved in sport participation, and is responsible for following their training instructions, doctor’s orders, and to develop proper health habits.
Likewise, the parent's/legal guardian's signature indicates an adherence to their and that of their child’s responsibilities, the rules and regulations associated with the school and that particular athletic team, and the understanding of the risks involved. The parent/guardian’s signature takes legal precedence and indicates full responsibility of their child. The parent/guardian agrees to hold the St. John School, Parish, Norwich Diocese, and any person associated therewith, harmless from any and all claims of bodily injury and property damaged arising from the use of facilities during the course of the activity. The parent/guardian also gives consent to have their child be given emergency treatment in cases when the parent/guardian is not present.
Injury
When an athlete has an injury which requires professional medical attention, that athlete will not be permitted to return to practice or to participate in a contest until written permission from his/her doctor is received by the coach and school nurse. Athletes are to report all injuries to their coaches. This includes injuries that occur both on and off the playing field.
Casts
Any student in a cast will not be able to participate in interscholastic sports or physical activity.
Inhalers
1. All athletes using inhalers must have their physician fill out a medication form and register with the school nurse.
2. Use of inhalers should be restricted to breaks, pre-game, and half time, if possible. Their use shall be monitored by
the school nurse during school hours.
3. An athlete who is having an asthmatic attack shall not be permitted to continue with the competition or activity.
4. Athletes who share inhalers will not be permitted to play and may face suspension.

All student athletes are covered by the school’s insurance policy from the Bailey Agency. Please refer to the school’s handbook for further information.
